Ricardo Rio

Ricardo Rio was the Mayor of Braga between 2013 and October 2025. He was a member of the Committee of the Regions, of the EUROCITIES network Excom and the Chair of the Global Parliament of Mayors. He was also, since 2016, one of the OECDs champions of inclusive growth.He was awarded the “World Mayor for Sustainability”, given by The City Mayors Foundation, and the Benjamin Barber Global Cities Award, given by the Global Parliament of Mayors. The city of Braga was awarded different recognitions in his terms, including Rising Innovative City in Europe in 2025.He is a private and public consultant to several institutions and he teaches in different Universities and Polytechnic Institutes. Among other activities, Ricardo Rio is the Head for EMEA and Strategic Partnerships on GeSI – Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative.
