Kate McLean-MacKenzie is a practicing designer, lecturer, researcher and collector of smells and stories. As the world expert on smell walking and smell scape mapping, she has spent 14 years communicating how humans sense the world through their noses.

To date she has researched and generated over 30 major public smell scape mapping projects and in the process, she has led 200 smell walks. Her work exhibits internationally and forms part of 5 permanent collections including the Smithsonian.

She has published extensively in academia, including co-editing ‘Designing with Smell: Practices, techniques and challenges’, Routledge. She is now working on an ‘Atlas of Scents, Smells and Stinks’ commissioned by Orion Press due in 2027.
