Alexandre Farto aka Vhils
Urban Archaeologist, Acclaimed Street Artist
Portugal
Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, aka Vhils (b. 1987), developed a unique visual language by removing surface layers of walls using unconventional tools. He began with graffiti in the early 2000s, exploring urban culture like an archaeologist.
Vhils creates powerful portraits from materials the city rejects. Since 2005, he has exhibited worldwide, working with communities like Rio’s favelas and institutions such as MAAT and Palais de Tokyo.
Vhils uses stencil, metal, pyrotechnics, video, and installations. He has also directed music videos, short films, and stage productions, expanding his art beyond bas-relief carving.
